Toyota, 3M, Siemens Named Best Green Brands
Written by Melissa Hincha-Ownby
Interbrand, a leader in brand management, has released a list of the Best Global Green Brands 2011, and automaker Toyota came out on top. Toyota, maker of the best-selling hybrid Toyota Prius, jumped up from the number 11 spot it held last year. However, Interbrand’s recognition of Toyota’s green efforts goes beyond the Prius. The report recognizes the company’s partnership with Tesla, Toyota’s company-wide environmental initiatives and energy efficiency programs as well.
3M takes the second place spot this year, up from 90th place last year. This is a huge jump for the company behind well-recognized brands like Post-It and Scotch. The Interbrand report commends 3M for first setting up an environmental policy in 1975, offering more eco-friendly brands to its customers and its energy management programs.
The number three spot on the Best Global Green Brands 2011 list is held by Siemens; like 3M, Siemens also made a big jump up from number 49 in 2010. Part of the big jump in ranking is due to Siemens’ Green Buildings program, which saves the company 23,000 mWh in energy use each year. Another factor contributing to the company’s third place ranking was the acquisition of renewable energy firms.
The rest of the companies in the top 10 include Johnson & Johnson (4), HP (5), Volkswagen (6), Honda (7), Dell (8), Cisco (9) and Panasonic (10).
